There are a number of areas to inspect outside of a houseboat. Take a look at the following things you have to check closely before buying or hiring a houseboat.

HULL. If the hull is steel, look for any signs of rust. Check it from the inside and outside, as many get corroded from the inside out. With a flashlight, get down the hatch and thoroughly check the inside of the hull. Check the joint welds for cracks and other signs of weakness (do this also with aluminum hulls). For fiberglass hull, check for stress cracks or blistering.

ROOF. Walk around the roof and check for chips or cracks in the gel coat, and for weak spots. Weak spots are a sign of rotting wood.

CABIN JOINTS. It’s also important to check the areas where the cabin joins the hull. There shouldn’t be any gaps.

CANVAS and LIGHTS. These are often overlooked, but it’s important to check the canvas for fading and wear. Make sure all lights, including exterior lights are working properly.
